How did all these posts happen? Aren't we supposed to be commenting on the photography? This site is not for condemning different cultures, but for enjoying the talents of the contributors. These images are beautifully composed. They are presented in such a way that the viewer can see the beauty of Lancaster County, and the "way of the Amish." A very nice gallery, Terry! I have read most of the posts here and it seems that the people with negative to say have or do live very near them. My experience is the same. Next farm neighbors. I have seen the abuse, not agricultural treatment, ABUSE!! I just witnessed a horse today, pulling a buggy pushed to exhaustion and collapse, it laid for nearly a full minute before it could move and the amish laughed. Romanticize and fantasize all you want, living around them has taught me that they can be just as dangerous as anyone, maybe more so. They don't like the "english" that is why they use that term. It is similar to the use of the word that starts with the 14th letter of our alphabet. They will never have my respect again. Ask them where they washed their hands after using the outhouse before you buy that shew fly pie.

I know they will shoot their neighbor's dog's eye out when it comes on their property when their dog is in heat, not even bothering to call the neighbor and let him know there is a problem so he can put his country dog up (Olney-Clarita, Oklahoma). Yeah, you better give these people a long hard look!! Wonder why they never live in a city limits with laws and rules?

Its funny reading all the crap your posting. Have you forgotten what it was like in the past before cars? they had to use horses for plowing ect. That was how God had intended bk in those days. so why is it diff now? they are saving on gas which now is a fortune and went bk to there roots so to speak. Instead of preaching on the abuse of there animals, think of the abuse we are doing every day we fill up our cars or tractors.

Yes, they look sweet and sublime, but anyone who treats any other living creature the way they treat theirs, particularly their dogs, is NOT a Godly person. Sadly, they will have to wait until they are dead to reap their "REWARD" from God himself, who sees everything they do. Word of mouth can do amazing things. Keep spreading the word about these animal-haters and abusers, and eventually something will be done about them. I feel badly for their kids, who really don't know any better and grow up without the example of how a truly Godly, Christ-like person should behave. Sad and sort of cult-like.....

I live in Lancaster County and I can tell you the Amish aren't what most people think they are. The mighty dollar is just as important to them as it is to anyone else. Some of them do take care of their animals, but many unfortunately, do not. They are protected by the laws of the state. In PA anything considered "agriculture" is basically unprotected, hence farm animals are subject to any kind of treatment the farmer gives, without little consequence. There is a movement brewing to try to get more protection for the horses that have to pull the buggies...this past summer was brutal for these poor horses. Please support the anti-puppy mill legislature and if it comes to pass, any legislature that will protect the animals that come under the "protection" of their Amish owners.

Maybe you should pray for those innocent little girls that are being abused-RAPED and those poor animals who are at the mercy of ignorant self absorbed hypocrites-their livestock worked without mercy, to the bone-literally-dying in fields of exhaustion, dehydrated and starving...I AM ANGRY that the state is allowing this to happen and that people can justify these behaviours...the "regular" public would charged with statutory rape..why are these people exempt? Their "lifestyle" is just an excuse for a male dominated society - I can definatley tell you they would NOT pray for me as they have no respect for "outsiders". and by the way, the Amish think ALL outsiders will burn in hell....WAKE UP

I live in Lancaster and am fed up with the way a lot of the Amish treat their animals. I have seen overworked horses pulling heavy loads of people in the hot heat of summer, tour buggy horses that are overworked, 7days a week. Not all tour buggy places are Amish but they're out there to make a buck, never mind the care of the horses. I saw one horse stumbling over his feet, his head hanging low, pulling a huge carriage full of tourists. If only the tourist knew about how these horses are treated. Horses going down to the ground because of heat exhaustion, horses and/or mules going down while plowing a field only to die there on the spot. What is wrong with these people? They treat their animals like they're machinery... they're NOT. They have a heart that beats, they feel pain, they feel like we do when it's hot or cold. Most of the farmers don't provide shelter for their animals out in the pastures, so they have to stand out in the hot,hot sun during the winter, and the freezing cold winds of winter. Where it the humanity? These animals are God's gift to us... they should be treated as such. I am writing to the Governor because the Humane League Law Enforcer said that he can't do anythin to protect the safety of animals of the Amish. That's crazy. ALL animals need to live without pain and in an environment theyre meant to be in. I saw some barn geese with no water, but the Humane League said they couldn't even suggest a wading pool to the Amish owners of these geese. That's no right. If anyone knows the exact act that the law enforcers have to follow, please let me know... I believe it's like Title 15... that law need to change. Thank you. And to the person who is writing a book on how lovely the Amish are... open your eyes, take a close look at what you see, not just how crafty they are. When I'm able to move out, I may also write a book, a book made just for tourist. But, right now I drive the Amish at times because I need supplemental income but once I get a part-time job with the "English", that will be it for the driving.

I have lived and worked in construction with the Amish my whole life and yes, to your face (like any salesperson), they are mild and friendly. However, they are extremely judgmental, rude and inconsiderate to English at grocery stores, parks, etc. I have had more than my share of this behavior. The sexual and physical abuse is rampant according to ex-Amish and is dealt with in the church rather than reported to the proper authorities. If you call the police or other agency, you are shunned by your family and church. Don't even get me started with the abuse of animals. My wife works for a local veterinarian and sees horrific treatment of puppies people purchase off of them. In fact, she had to assist in a euthanasia of a puppy that was never vaccinated and got parvo. Sadly, the owner purchased from an Amish man for his disabled son. This is but one example. Don't let them fool you. I personally will not purchase anything from those who condone abuse and judge harshly.

There are no laws against in PA. See, dogs are considered livestock and therefore they dont have to abide by the laws that i would have to abide by in NY. There are thousands upon thousands of people fighting legislature to pass stricter laws. Working for rescues, i can tell you they are horrible horrible people. I used to go to Dutchland with my family until i got to really know them. They WILL NEVER get another dime from me or my family members ever again. And do you know who does all the business transactions when animals are rescued from them? THEIR KIDS!!! I have been dealing with the same child since he was 8! (he's now 11) I am not a violent person by any means, but the Amish can rot in hell for all i care. The world would be a safer place.

As if they would post pictures of the tiny cages they keep dogs in & their weak & starving horses they have no use for...They do nothing but adbuse & neglect...from raping ( in-breeding) the children- making them mothers at 11-12 years old--to not allowing women to get educated and have a voice...to being excessively cruel to animals of ALL kind...dogs, horses etc...the last puppy mill auction I was involved with all the Amish had cell phones? I have been working with animal rescues for 3 years now. Thought i'd shed some light on these wonderful, God-loving Amish people! Know how sometimes when you're driving through Amish country and you sometimes see fires in fields? They are horses that they set fire to, while they are alive. See, they have to pay for euthanasia so they choose to do it themselves. I've also personally witnessed them dragging starved horses to open fields...where they let the birds, literally, eat them alive. The puppymill situation is disgusting and heartbreaking. DId you know these amazing wonderful Amish people leave them in cages outside? Have you ever seen a starved, frozen dog? They are greedy pieces of garbage!!! Last i heard, god hates greed, i wonder how they bypass that? I started working in animal rescue because because of them. Before that, i was a counselor. The rate of sexual abuse in amish/mennonite communities is through the ROOF! But it is kept under wraps. What would GOD say about that? The children are like zombies. When i go to visit them, they are staring out windows, wide-eyed and dirty. The only comparison i can come up with is it looks like Children of the Corn. So go ahead and praise these animals, but do some research. THey will burn in hell for the atrocities they commit. God's eyes are most certainly watching them.

I appreciate Terry’s photographs. They are artistic and well thought-out. Many of them are also revealing, if you know what to look for… isn’t it interesting how many of the products used by the Amish are modern in design? Such as scooters, roller blades, strollers, etc. And yet, except for the “Amish Cart” photo, every single wheel on a conveyance or machine intended to be pulled by a horse or mule is METAL. Quite damaging to the roads that the Amish do not pay road tax for, and extremely taxing upon the strength of the animals forced into slavery. Look, too, at “Buggy Ride”. Notice the harness upon the horse. You can very clearly view the crupper—the loop of leather surrounding the horse’s tail—an unnecessary piece that frequently rubs the horses’ skin raw. This photo also easily allows you to see the strap (called the overcheck rein) that runs over the horse’s head, between the ears and back to the gig saddle that surrounds the horse’s torso, often tying directly into the line leading to the crupper - hence the horse's head is tied to his/her tail bone. (Sometimes the same rein will be run along the upper sides of the horse’s head rather than over.) The purpose of the overcheck rein is to prevent the horse from lowering his/her head. It can be tightened to any degree, but is usually left on the entire time the horse is in harness, which is often for many hours and sometimes an entire day; even when ascending and descending hills, when a horse needs the freedom of his/her head to put forth full effort. Although they claim other reasons for it, the primary and ongoing motive is for those Amish who are attempting to impress the “English” (as any non-Amish person is called), the higher the horses’ head, the “happier” (and closer to the image flaunted by those who profit from the Amish) s/he seems to look, and the better the Amish seem to appear in the eyes of the English. Regardless of the fact that in truth, the horse is suffering from muscular fatigue, back strain, extreme tension upon their windpipe, etc. No, not every Amish person treats others (of any species) dreadfully. But the primary traditions are typically followed by the vast majority, and those customs are FAR from the "quaint" picture promoted by the Amish culture. I have lived surrounded by "Old Order" Amish for decades and have transported them in my own vehicle (in an effort to relieve the horses of even one trek). I have also been personally insulted and physically threatened, and I know FOR A FACT that the details found upon the following sites are 100% valid. Well, none of the animals look like the tortured souls bound to the amish way of cruelty that can be found all over the net and by visiting Lancaster County. Animal cruelty is casually...CASUALLY...mentioned as a normal way of life in a book used for learning from the amish in a class offered at FSU in Frostburg, MD.

Horse auctions... New Holland is said to have under weight malnurished horses... well have you ever gone to any other auctions.... Amish use animals as tools like our ancestors used to..... remember there were no cars, buses , planes, horses were the main travel...... Amish are simple and happy and friendly... When my dog died, my daughter and daughter-in-law went on the hunt trying to replace my beloved Mr. Jones. They came across an ad on the internet for Maltese puppies for sale and low and behold that is how I got my new baby Quincy. Unknowingly, my girls got Quincy from a puppy mill. My granddaughter and I figured it out when the girls told us they got him from Lancaster County. I knew that Lancaster County was famous for puppy mills and with further investigation we all found out that Quincy came from Milwood Puppies, which is considered to be one of the worst, and largest kennels in PA. They sold over 900 puppies last year and according to the inspection by the US Dept of Agriculture the kennel is in disrepair. The inspection found rusty nails protruding into the kennels, puppies stuck where their feet trapped in the wire under the cages, unsanitary conditions, such as extraordinary amounts of feces in the cages where the puppies were contained, and the inspector had to cover his face due to the overwhelming stench of amonia. When I spoke the the man who sold Quincy to my girls, I asked him the age of my puppy's mother he replied 4 years old. I asked what litter was he, he then replied he was the 5th litter. I asked him how many female producing mothers he had in his business he said he had 40. I asked how many males for reproducing purposes, he stated he had 10. I asked him if he would allow me to view his "kennel", he responded with a no answer. He said, that I would not understand the conditions that the animals were kept in. That they were in small cages, but that his children would take them out once in a while and play with them. I asked him how he could treat God's creatures in such a cruel way by housing them and making money off of them like that. The response I got sickened me, well they have no souls. My reply to him was how do you know there are no animals in heaven? I read in the Bible that Jesus will be coming on horses, so there blows this dude's theory!

As we speak, I am sitting in my house located in the heart of Lancaster County. Everyone who comments about how simple and wonderful the Amish are, are completely mistaken. These people are cruel and money-driven, much like the rest of the world. They will do just about anything for money, including working their horses to the bone (literally) and raising dogs in kennels (puppy mills). They leave their small children, as young as 5, out by the road to sell their farm produce. They also allow their young ones to walk on the road, in the middle of the road oftentimes, without shoes and without supervision. Their teenagers, no sweeter than the other teenagers of the US, often drink, smoke, throw parties in the middle of the cornfields, and fill the abortion clinics with their unwanted fetuses. Doesn't sound particularly christian to me. Also, the rate of birth defects due to inbreeding is astounding. I invite you to visit Lancaster county, but this time, be aware of what you are really looking at.

Regardless of what animals these groups are using them for, labor, or raising to sell for profits, all should be treated as humane as POSSIBLE!!! i guess they just don't get it!!!...but of course one would have to have a heart and feelings!!!!!!these animals feel pain just as a human would.......it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize this known fact....if you believe in any god, you would have learned this fact.....i think it is very ignorant to treat animals/children this way.....and if the facts really be known, most of these people DO abuse, ignore, abandon etc. these precious creatures of god, even tho you all do not believe that!!!!! the percentage of these people who are humane is very low!!!!! yes, others do treat their pets/animals poorly, but i would never believe to the extent of the Amish and Mennonites, and to the amount of animals!....the sad part of this is i really don't understand their cruelty statics and why they use them, plus they think it is all a joke as they laugh at the sickly ones, while they are dying etc...!!!! I am glad that God is watching, he will be the one to take care of all of them in the end!!!!!

I do know that farmers tend to b tight w/things like feed, n have a different view than myself, however I can't say that I'd ever b able to make it as a vegan. I'm guessing that if a horse (Tool) were 2 come of no service, it would c the road 2 auction, as I have seen racehorses leave the track, luckily I worked for a couple that worshiped all 100 or so horses they had, so r's left the track 2 become brood mares n pony & riding horses. I currently after a car accident have 2 would have been racehorses I use as lawnmowers since my car accident, and when I settle, I plan on paying a few land payments, n rescuing a few of those eastern horses to run a race or two, or b mama horses. In short, TY Facebookers like Anouk Busch, n slaughter awareness sites that r teaching USA'ers that horses r going across the border.

"John", there are no Englishmen in this country. You must be amish with internet, or a lousy apologist. The amish overwork their horses because they are disposable and easily replaced. There are too many horses around. If a horse can't be properly cared for from birth to death, it should never be bred. And hello! We now have tractors and automobiles to do the work of animals. As for dog breeding, there is no way any dog should be sold for any amount of money when shelters are full of unwanted dogs. I blame the gullible public just as much as the breeders, private, backyard, or wholesale. The shelters are full of Jack Russells that ignorant people bought on a whim and later found they could not deal with. Think the breeders care hey only care about the Almighty Dollar, and the amishman gets more of those Almighty Dollars because he can breed a hundred cheap dogs while a smaller scale breeder can only breed a few. The New Holland auction gets a bad reputation from skinny horses, as if the auction itself is responsible for the condition of the animals they house overnight. If anyone here has been to the auction they would know that the majority of sellers are local and out of state dealers and are in fact ‘English’ (regular people). You equine people make me laugh. In fact, do you know that outside of the equine community you are referred to as “horse people” or horse “f*ers”? My Amish neighbor decided not to sell a very nice saddlebred to a horse f*er because she was threatening to smack his horse if it bit her. pot – kettle – black Do Amish abuse their horses? Why would they, they are their livelihood and without them they would be screwed. They can’t afford to run out, buy and train a new draft horse every year you idiots. They care very much for their livestock and I witness this first hand every day. The puppy mill myth is another issue that irritates me. The puppy mill rumor started when Amish started selling puppies cheaper than English dealers could. Spite is a horrible thing… Seriously, who is going to buy a half-dead dog? My neighbor lost four Fox Terriers to a rabid raccoon last summer and the entire family was heartbroken. His only stallion—Rocky—was kicked by another horse and died and he was visibly upset because he loved the horse so much. His only joy of the situation is knowing that within a month there will be a Rocky Jr. running around the barn. Most of the people that talk trash on the Amish are people that think horses shouldn’t be worked, but coddled. In fact, these horse people are often outsiders in their own community due to their own self-importance. The other trash talk comes from the people that are losing money because Amish sell expensive dogs at a lower price. Example: English price – Jack Russell puppies $650 - $1,000 Amish price – Jack Russell puppies $150 - $350 I could see how if I sold puppies for a living how this could screw my business up. Are the Amish perfect, hell no, but they are a lot better to be around then the typical Englishman.

If a person has any questions about if the Amish lifestyle is good or bad (for lack of better words), just attend the Sugarcreek horse or New holland horse auctions. Sick, skinny, mistreated horses are brought in from the Amish when they are no longer useful. If they aren't purchased by a rescue, then they are shipped to mexico and canada and bled to death. Now, not every person who sells his horse to these auctions is Amish, but plenty are. Just watch how the Amish handle their horses, no explaination is needed. FYI- I am Christian. Animals are God's creatures, and although used by humans, should be treated with respect-not discarded and abused. Shame on the Amish for how they treat their animals-not to mention their women. Oppressed.

I am glad that people are talking about how cruel the Amish are to the creatures that serve them. Livestock are just means to make a profit, and if it's broken, they discard it, but not before they try to extract the last little bit of money possible. Amish farmers buy injured or non-winning Standardbreds off the track, and work them into the ground. Skinny horses pulling buggies over paved roads may look quaint and charmiong to some, but there is pain and suffering behind that pastoral image. An injured horse that cannot work is denied food and care while it is waiting to be taken to auction, where it is sold to kill buyers for a few cents a pound. Why waste feed on an animal that can't earn it's keep? Emaciated horses, barely able to walk, are whipped into the auction pens at New Holland while greedy Amishmen count the money. The Amish are evil and the scourge of Lancaster County, and it is disgusting how they hide behind their religion.. I look forward to the day when the genetic disasters resulting from their inbreeding finally kill them off.

It blows my mind how cruel some of the comments are. My best freind is Amish, I am an English (non-Amish). My great grandfather married an English woman and left the Amish community many years ago. I truely wished he hadn't. I'm not sure if the Amish community would take me and my many children back into the fold, I would love to go 'back home'. I have been around the Amish for about 15 years of my life, and I have never seen anyone disrespecting any animals. Some of you abviously have never been on a real working Amish farm. Farm work is hard. Well our economy crashes, who will really be okay? The Amish will, they live mostly off the land, and have very strong family units. Unlike the typical English families. Next time 'look' at the Amish, not just 'peer', no one is perfect. Other wise you would be God and not the Lord himself. Look in your soul before you judge others, no perfection there and much forgiveness needed.

wow, you read a book, i guess you all know all about the amish huh? i have lived on and worked my family's farm for 52 yrs on the chester, lancaster county border. i have seen just about everything the amish are capable of. they are without any doubt, SOME of the worst people in the area, i have caught, not heard of, or suspected, CAUGHT them stealing on MANY occasions, caught them shooting deer after dark, out of season, with no regard where they are aiming, and i have a hole in my milking parlor to proof it, they think they can go anywhere they want and do anything they want, the police will do nothing about them. the amish have absolutely no respect for anyone other than amish, if you think they are "good people", THEN YOU DON'T KNOW SHIT ABOUT THEM.

Beverly Lewis isn't the only good author of the Amish lifestyle. Wanda Brunstetter is an excellent author. I have read many books by both of these authors, and thoroughly enjoy them both. As has been mentioned throughout a lot of these comments, there are good and bad in every society. "Do not judge, lest ye be judged." The Amish are living their lives according to what they believe God has dictated. I don't agree with a lot of their teachings; but it would be great if we could all live a simpler life style without all the technology of today. I also believe God has given man the knowledge to bring us to this point in technology, but as man's love of knowledge, money and power grows greater, our society has fallen far from God. His word warnes us of this very thing. At least the Amish do not have that temptation since they live simple lives. I would love to be able to live a simple life without all the crime and busy-ness of today's world.

Many people have many different versions of things that they see going on. We have a farm and many things we do on the farm with animals, doesn't seem very nice at times. I want the best food for my family, no unhealthy additives and such...so for instance, I might get my husband to kill one of our meat chickens and I sit and pluck the feather's from her lifeless bleeding body....a horrid sight indeed! 'The kill' was with a swift sharp axe that be-headed her. God gave us the animals to use for food and survival. I've had friends scrunch up their noses and say, "ahh...that's gross, you're gonna cook and eat that poor chicken?" My answer is...THIS chicken has had a wonderful life, in a coop with friends, good food, fresh garden treats and clean cool water and been able to roam around a yard, what more could 'a chicken' hope for? The chicken you eat from the grocery store is force fed medicated meat builders in a 2x 2ft cage, and probably never saw the sunlight and was killed with a knife up its beak, done by a machine. Think about THAT next time you go grocery shopping! Who's cruel I ask? I think its a shame to see beautiful horses just standing in a field dorment for hours....looking so gloomy and bored and useless. I think it is wrong to judge all amish on the few you have really seen. It seems like most of the horses seem truly happy to pull the buggies. Most seem extremly excited to see their owners come out of the store. Just yesterday I saw an Amish man come out of a store. He walked to his horse and pet it for a good ten minutes. Then he gave it a few apples and some carrots. Not all amish are cruel to their animals!

I live in this area and daughter's friends have witnessed their Amish 'landlords' shoot 2 red tailed hawks, beat a raccoon in a leghold trap to death w/rocks. Its not just puppy mill dogs they're cruel to. There are a few Amish who don't partake in these things but they won't stick up for an animal if they see their neighbor doing something wrong. My Amish neighbor is a young woman with hardly a smile on her face. She is pregnant again w/child number 3 and not even 24 yrs old. I see her kids by themselves sometimes. She lets them cry a long time before she intervenes . I think she is 'tired' already. The last thing she needs is another baby. Im frankly quite sick of the tourists enchantment w/who are far from 'kind and gentle ppl'. The picture society paints of them is not accurate for the most part. Oh, yea,..they're 'nice' as far as "they'll wave at you in passing'. But they get away w/so much its not even funny. (walking around barefooted in stores when others would get kicked out, getting hired @jobs and not having to wear uniforms cuz they're 'Amish', and yes, they get away w/a lot of animal cruelties cuz its hard to keep track of what they do behind closed doors. Live hera about 10 yrs and see if you disagree.

I live in an area with alot of Amish farms. I never found the Amish to be charming! When I was about 10 years old, I saw a horse fall as it was crossing a rain slicked highway! I had a very disturbing experience on Saturday. I was driving my daughter to a friend's house. We were driving through the country and came upon a field. In the field was an Amish plow with about six mules attached. One of the mules was laying on the ground flat on its side! Of course I was very upset. I took my daughter to her friend and came back that way (after my daughter told me I should find another way to go home). As I got to the "scene" an Amish man was coming out of the field to his buggy which was parked along the road. I felt I had to stop and share my opinion with him. I told him I found this very disturbing, he replied "what?". I continued to remind him that the temperature was 94 degrees and that they were torturing those animals by making them pull the plow in such hot weather! I also mentioned that the animals do have feelings, he looked away and kind of snickered! I told him it was NOT funny! Then I asked him if he would like to get in front of the plow and pull it in 94 degree weather. His response was, "oh I have to cross the road now, there is a car coming". The mule had his head up by this time and there was another Amish man poking him with a stick, trying to make him get up! I wanted to get out of my car and go into the field but I wasn't sure what to do! I drove away and shook all of the way home! What makes it okay for the Amish to use their religion to abuse horses and mules for transportation and farming machines? They have no problem riding in someones car or using cell phones.

I used to think the Amish were charming until more intimate contacts revealed a much darker side when concerns their animals, especially horses. They can be very heartless especially when it comes to their buggy horses. Those animals are considered disposable by the Amish for the most part. I have seen the long suffering horses tied up outside business and auctions on blistering summer days with no shade or water for hours. Likewise I have seen the hapless buggy horses tied up all day outside their homes, awaiting yet another punishing trip down concrete or asphalt roads, surfaces for which horses were not designed to be driven upon. I have respect for religious beliefs, but to an extent. I think it is ridiculous that they use religion as an excuse to poorly treat God's creatures.

I recently bought a Morgan mare in Lancaster area from an Amish farmer. I am sickened by the puppy mill situation.. and the New Holland auction.. but it is ALSO very wrong to judge ALL AMISH by those that get the media attention. I had that mare bred back and in doing so visited 4 other Amish farms (We discussed feed and suppliments for optimum breeding)... I truely feel that most Amish are good stewards of the land and animals..There are few that mistreat and abuse their animals( JUST LIKE THE REST OF THE WORLD ).. and the real crime here is that the one bad apple spoils the whole bunch. It was also brought to my attention recently by a Vet.. that horses that are put down are NOT cremated as I had thought.. they are sent to the local LAND FILL to be buried in garbage and rot away!!... I agree with Bob Barker.. Have your pet spayed and neutered.. and ADOPT from a shelter..Do not buy from Pet stores. Take the dollars away from the negligent and corrupt people (Amish or not) .. and leave the farmers (Amish or not) alone... Let the ASPCA inforce the regulations and standards.. and shut down the dispicable and greedy businesses. (I live in NJ, and my dogs sleep on my couch!!)

Amish are good farmers and stewards of the land and animal(may have a few singular issues) Anyone who farms for a bussines or livelyhood deals with harsh realities of Culling sick, injured, lame, and old animals, and that might be sending them to auction or to slaughter. Draft stock are not pets, but a form of traction. Amish have small sustainable farms, that practice crop rotations and close interaction animal husbantry. Amish stock in Lancaster set the national trend for agriculture prices on dairy/pork/vegs/ etc.. If you think Amish animals look bad then you have not seen the rest of the country. Feedlots, factory farms, mega dairys etc, conditions in these facilities are shameful, and uncomparible to Amish farms. Amish and Mennonite Farms are the best we have....take a closer look

They always give me and my family food and they let us come in their homes. They even let us ride in buggies. I have rode in an open cart and a closed buggy. I have studied the amish. We have a few Amish in our county, Lincoln Co., Kentucky. They never bother anyone. The shootings of the children, girls, in PA was horrible. If you want to die, don't take others with you. I have read many of the comments written here regarding the Amish abuse of their animals. Amazing how they look so meek, so kind and so gentle, but how harsh and how tragic the reality really is. They view their animals, especially their working horses as simply "tools".... (get as much as you can out of them, then simply toss them out). TRAGIC. Underneath those gentle looking faces are some very hard-core, controlling individuals and my heart goes out to the beautiful Equine that they push to the limits then cast them aside.

Rosemary - yes, you are right - I was not commenting about all Amish, just a majority of them. Just go to the New Holland horse sale every Monday and see the condition the horses are in when the Amish are finished with them for the season, and decide to sell them for slaughter many are emaciated, injured and obviously not well or properly cared for. I too have been to Amish country and think it is beautiful, but never took a good look at a lot of their animals until a few years ago. I was horrified with a lot of what I saw. That alone is what made me make the comment. But back to the real purpose of this site - the photos are wonderful and the photographer has a great eye for composition. Good job!

I was just in Refton, PA, south of Lancaster at my aunts neighbors Amish farm. There was a very competent vet (non Amish, of course) there caring for a sick animal. The other horses, mules, cows and chickens looked very healthy and happy so don't say all Amish abuse and mistreat their animals. There are good and there are, unfortunatly, unenlightened people in all types of humans. Maybe if we are extra kind to everyone it could be a nicer earth.

Your photos of the amish are beautiful. The compostions are wonderful. But all of the photos are of the Amish animals in their "useful" stage - working. Too bad they treat their animals horribly and are consistent offenders of animal cruelty...when they are finished with their horses and mules for the season, they stop feeding them and then send them to auction to be bought by a meat buyer which them ships them far without food or water for days to their inhumane death by slaughter. And pity the animal that may get injured or beaten as many are - no veterinary care AT ALL....Nice way to treat your beast of burden. It is an American disgrace....sorry to have to post this comment, but everyone should be aware of this truth.

Great gallery. I travel frequently in Northern Central Indiana. There's nothing as thrilling as coming over a hill at speed, only to come upon a buggy quietly plodding along. The Amish cabinetry shops in Napanee, IN supply several major RV manufacturers with cabinets for very expensive motor homes. Quite a paradox, wouldn't you say?

I liked the Amish pictures, especially the horses. I have four Belgians which I play (at working) with each weekend. I was fascinated by the modern equipment they work with and how they adapt them to work with the horses. Thanks for telling where to look for the pictures on your site.

Nice shots of the plain people. I am curious though as to how you went about getting approval for photographing their faces as it is usually frowned upon in most communities?

Hi Terry, Just wanted to say that i enjoyed your Amish country album. I was surprised at how many hits mine has gotten. Didn't realize there were that many people out there interested in the Amish. I am originally from a small town called Ephrata, Pa and now live in Florida. I do try and get back there as often as possible. The one farmers market i enjoy the most is called The Green Dragon, just outside Ephrata. It is open only on Fridays and has been there forever. I remember going as a kid and i am 64 now. The area around Intercourse has alot of neat shops for gifts and personal use. Again, enjoyed your album and am on my way to look at your other albums. Terry: Nice images! I've been to Lancaster County but never got images like these. How did you get around the Amish dislike of having their photo taken? Richard Devine: I was born and raised in central PA (Lock Haven) and visit there often. There are more Amish there now than you might think.

I'm surprised you came accoss my one Amish picture (http://www.pbase.com/ericsorensen/image/33913437 ). And you are right - it was around Lancaster, PA. We were travelling through there and took a detour to look around. Anyway - nice shots you have here.

This is a great gallery; gets my vote. It makes me want to head up that way and take some photos. I haven't been in a long time, but used to go to an Amish farmer's auction there about once a month for produce. Two of the men told me I was smart since I didn't pay the higher prices for brown eggs.

Aye, grew up out in central PA. Not as many Amish as in southeastern PA, but still a number of farms around. They'd always show up at the auction barn for weekly farm auctions. They'd be riding along the highway on their buggies. Very nice people. For people not aware, its fine to be friendly and wave at them as you pass them on the highway, just don't beep to get their attention. (Tends to scare the horses sometimes)
