Vireo gundlachii
This ubiquitous vireo is endemic to Cuba, where it is a common inhabitant of most wooded areas. The species' scientific name, like that of several Cuban birds, celebrates the amazing contribution of German-born naturalist Johannes Gundlach to Cuban ornithology. Gundlach devoted virtually his entire life to exploring the Cuban countryside, not only for birds. As many as four different subspecies have been named, two of which occur on the main island (although the eastern race, orientalis, is not always admitted), and the others on smaller cays (the Cayo Cantiles, and Cayo Real). This is the nominate race from western and central Cuba.
