Ferminia cerverai
Restricted to sawgrass marshes of the Zapata region, this wren belongs to another genus that is endemic to Cuba. It is distinctly rare and uncommon, and localities seem to be variously colonised for a few years and then abandoned. Fortunately, at present, there are several pairs in the region of La Turba, which is a relatively easy site to access. Just a decade or so ago it was necessary to visit the rather more distant Santo Tomás area and spend some time wading in water up to waist or more deep to find this secretive wren; in comparison Turba is easily reached from either of the two main resorts in the Zapata region, Playa Larga or Playa Girón, and it is possible to see the bird from the car!
