Western Spindalis

Spindalis zena pretrei

The former Stripe-headed Tanager (like other North American tanagers, it is not a 'real' tanager) was recently split into four species, of which the westernmost representative is the most widespread species, reaching to Mexico's Yucutan Peninsula, where it is found solely on Cozumel Island. The other species are all restricted to single islands, Jamaica, Hispaniola and Puerto Rico. Western Spindalis is easily found at a number of sites on the Cuban mainland. The race pretrei is endemic to Cuba and several of its offshore cays. This photograph was taken on Cayo Guillermo.
