Now I can just hear the cries now;this isn't about Hadrian's Wall,it's not even near Hadrian's Wall. But,it's foundations are Roman.Rey Cross,is a marker and medieval meeting point.50 metres west of the present location of the cross stump,is a very large Roman temporary camp.Univallate(means one ditch and mound),the sort of camp the Romans constructed for an overnight stop. The camp was probably constructed in the 1st.Century AD.It is very close to the highest point of the Stainmore Pass, which is still one of the main routes across the Pennine hills in the North of England.During the Middle Ages the Rey Cross was erected as a marker, beside the Roman Camp,to act as a meeting place,as three counties meet here,to sort out disputes. The current A66 trans Pennine route, follows the Roman road very closely.Rey Cross also marks the spot where Eric Bloodaxe,Viking leader, was treacherously slain, leading to the demise of Viking York.
