I suppose where I was standing was as near as I'll ever get to the surface of a Roman Road.It's probably fair to say that the original road surface,what's left of it,is probably several feet below where I was standing,yet the alignment,as set out by the Roman engineers,has endured for almost 2000 years.The original road would have been raised above the surface of the land,with a drainage ditch on either side.
