Religiosity does not cure poverty -- that is what this image says to me. The statue might glow in the sun, but the reality of a woman checking out the contents of a garbage can implies realities that can't be ignored.
I, too, see this as a metaphor for the role organized religion plays in the everyday lives of people. However, it speaks to me of distance and detachment, of religion simply being out of touch.
Even though the image speaks of the boxed Jesus - I still get a feeling here of spiritual blessing and light. It seems to me a metaphor for the role religion plays in so many lives. It seems to quietly warm them.
Religion in a box! Maybe it needs protection from acid rain or pigeons.
The fence adds another layer of distance to this downcast statue in the street.
As if to say "Look, but don't touch!" And none of the people even glance at it.
