December 2011 Lunar Eclipse

In planning for this event, I knew I wanted to locate myself close to where I would have a view of the partially eclipsed moon setting in the vicinity of the capitol dome. I had done lots of shooting of the moon over the previous few years and was able to make the calculations pretty easily. There was a row of houses in Monona along Tonyawatha Drive where this view would be possible. I went to the neighborhood around 7 am on the Saturday a week before the eclipse, equipped with my iPad and some of my photos. Pretty soon, a woman emerged from one of the houses to pick up her morning paper. I approached her, introduced myself as a photographer, and showed her some of my shots. I explained that the following week, I had a chance to shoot a great picture, but I needed to be in her backyard to do it. She immediately offered her yard to me and said they'd be sleeping still (the event took place prior to sunrise), but assured me that I was welcome to use their property.

The following week, my daughter and I ventured out and shot the entire event from about 90 minutes before sunrise, until the moon set right as the sun came up. The results are here. The composite shot at the end was a late effort, completed by me in December of 2014, a full three years after the event.
