A 1972 research paper by Edward Lorenz called "Predictability: Does the Flap of a Butterfly’s Wings in Brazil set off a Tornado in Texas?" - a primary tenet of chaos theory is a sensitivity to an initial condition, causing a chain reaction of events that can result in a seemingly unrelated large phenomenon. 'Noise' somehow felt appropriate to connect to the subject of a butterfly in relation to Chaos Theory.
