Silver Back Gorilla
by Denise

San Francisco Zoo

I blew out all the highlights in the straw trying to get the black of the gorilla metered properly. Not to mention the composition...smack in the middle of the photo.

other sizes: small medium original auto

Thanks Ray. i actually don't think any wild animal likes eye contact. I accidentally made eye contact with a female lion at a Wild Park Safari and she attacked our van!! I was quite far away from this magnicifient male but he may have been very aware of me. I did get some get shots of his beautiful silver back.

Thanks Katherine, Black is as hard as white to expose ;-)) Is it any wonder I am addicted to color??

Gorillas do not like any kind of eye to eye contact. A lens is a form of eye to them. Consequently this one is indeed purposefully turning away - from the intrusive eye. He is indeed majestic and belongs nowhere but in the center of our field of view. Sometimes one needs to ignore textbook rules.

Great capture - it looks like you did get the gorilla exposed correctly! I like his expression - it looks like he's obstinately refusing to look at the camera.
