'Sexy' Old Tulip

Spring Flower Pavilion, Krohn Conservatory

An aging tulip "exposes itself" at the local conservatory :)
I made a few people giggle because I ended up
down on the ground on my elbows for this view :)

I uploaded this second version of the original photo
to include the other tulip that was in the background.

Gaurav, direct sunlight was hitting these two tulips, but not much else in the immediate area. By getting really close to the tulips & exposing just for the tulips under these lighting conditions, the rest of the photo became a lot darker...almost black. Only a few other structures remained barely visible in the background. In PS7, I made them the same color as the rest of the background. Then I set the 'black point' to the background color and the 'white point' to the white color in the flower. This made the background less cluttered...& more evenly contrasting with the tulips. Mike - I see you did not use the flash for this photo - how do you create just dark backgrounds? Is it in post? Were you shining a light on the subject?? Also - i wanted to leave a compliment for your framing. I think it goes largely overlooked because your pictures are so impressive but your frames are always spot on and do a wonderful job of elegantly adding to your pictures. ~gk

What exactly do you mean? Oh I get it now. :) It's all in the details and they standout quite nicely in the clean sunlight. The much smaller one blurred in the background is a very nice touch.

Mike, I like the way those curvy lines lead the eye to the stigma and anthers. It is a graceful and sexy image indeed!
