Hot and cold H2O
by Willem

Here is a new version of my H2O image.
I left the first one in the gallery so you can compare.
I will remove the other one when I have more images to post.

Drops on a glass plate some 20 cm above a sheet of paper with
the letters H2O and a blue-white-red gradient printed on it.

other sizes: small medium original auto

Willem,
Wow, I thought it was 100% PS. I didn't read your description of how to you the photo. Very creative. Thanks Jim for pointing that out.

To Jim/Shutter : Thanks, Jim, I interpreted your comment in the positive way as you intended, I knew I had seen something like it before and thanks for pointing me to the right spot. Like you, I don't feel that there is anything wrong with imitations or variations on a theme. There is a lot of learning in it and one can always add ones own elements to it, like done here. If we would be limiting ourselves to things not photographed before and to ways not tried before, how much would remain ? Thanks again, Willem

Willem, this is amazing! I had thought it was photoshopped until I read your explanation. I am very impressed. Lisafx

Indeed THIS IS NOT PS WORK. The drops are placed on a glass plate using a straw, so they are not sprayed, and they just stick in place as long as they are not too large. You can even move them around a bit. The only PS work on this image is crop, levels, contrast using curves, slight sharpening and save for the web. NO SPOT EDITING AT ALL. Willem

Lamho,

This isn't PS work. Some processing may well have been done, but I don't think the lack of perfect circles is indicative of PS work. I think this is pretty much an unaltered work (as far as subject, anyway).

Hey Willem, I hope you know that I wasn't implying that there is anything wrong with being inspired by this idea. You had just mentioned in your other image that you had seen this before but didn't remember where... I was thinking it might be the photo reference from pp. I was thinking about trying this as well... jim/shutter

You should be the winner for PS contest. Some of the drops are not even round.

Hey Jim, I checked the image in the PP issue you mention, and yes, it is the same idea, it must have been in the back of my mind over the past year. Funny how also there the explanation starts with "after seeing similar photos in magazines I was inspired to have a go myself"..... By the way, some other inspirational water shots in the same issue. You might be right Jim. I can remember seeing something like it on dpchallenge.com (by jmsetzler, and he got it from someone as well) and I thought I had seen it somewhere else, just could not remember. I'll check. Thanks for your comments. Willem

Hi Willem - Practical Photography, March, 2002 - is that where you saw it? I coincidentally was reviewing old rags the other night and saw one like this and thought "I should try this for the Challenge!". But alas, you beat me to it, and this is much better than I ever would have accomplished. Way too much patience and detail for me to pull it off! Really, excellent job. So well executed. Jim/Shutter

I like this one much more than the other Willem. Somehow I can tell more easily that this is drops of water and I love the use of color. Good one! Ann C
