Maybe you can try to play a bit with the contrast (using curves) to see different results. Making them stronges does normally give quite a punch.

Thanks for the feedback, Frank, Ernest, Helen. b&w is a challenge for me. I was intrigued by the texture and shadows of this rusty disc and thought it had possibilities. Couldn't figure out the b&w setting in camera, so did a simple conversion in CS3.
