Hi -
Looking for a little help and, after your comment on Pondicherry India, "... if travelling through Tamil Nadu, don't bother with it", you may be able to help me.

I've posted the following in several forums and received practically no help: "The greatest joy of traveling in India for us is the people - and we've had wonderful experiences in the "north" http://picasaweb.google.com/luke6223

Now we're ready for 3-4 weeks in the "south". But when I venture through India Mike, Trek Earth, Picasa or Flickr, I get, predominantly, temples, landscapes and other "non-people" photos. I don't see many great people shots. To be sure, there are some wonderful photo ops with non-animate subjects, but there is not the same spark and vitality that one gets in human daily life situations.

Question: where are there great, or even good, people /daily life/market situations, towns, etc. in south India? What am I missing?"

Spoonbender, I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks

I don't think that you have studied about Bangkok and Thailand enough before you came here. I know that there are a lot of tourists who come here without any information and that makes them miss many good chances to see the nice parts and touch the spirit of the country. Buddhism is the main religion of this country and I as a buddhist respect in what we are. You made a lot of mistakes about giving the captions on each pictures you posted about Bangkok and this is not what you can make fun with. Religion is very sensitive thing and the Buddha is not your friend!

Henry's bool, "Thank You for Being Concerned and Sensitive," is one of the best I've ever read. And I've read plenty. And now I have all these wonderful travel musings and images to peruse ...

It's very small, has a good street life. lots of cafes and restaurants, a nice pedestrian section of the city. good public sculpture, interesting people, beautiful hills, reasonable prices, good museum, good bookshop, nice tram, pretty women.

what more can you ask for?
Guest 13-Nov-2005 02:17
You say "Okay, I say this all the time, but Sarajevo is the best place I've visited. I think. Well, Laos was good too. And Vietnam. Let's say in Europe and Mexico, so excluding Asia, Sarajevo is the greatest city I've been to. And I've barely seen any of it." Why is Sarajevo "the greatest city" you've been to? I haven't been outside the US much, and I'm curious! I want to understand more about other parts of the world. :)

Also, thanks for everything you're sharing--from photos to commentary to literature. After seeing your PBase stuff, I want to read your book. I liked Winseburg, Ohio; so according to the Amazon customer review, I will like your book, too. :)

Marhaba!

I made a trip to Abu Dhabi in october 2003. I love the UAE and the people and their way of life. My pictures are athttp://users.pandora.be/koen.george/GALLERY/UAE2003/PICS.HTM on my own website. Feel free to have a look at them. I was happy to recognise lots of places on your pictures. One day, I'll move to Abu Dhabi.
Guest 13-Nov-2003 05:59
Very nice work. As a fellow travel junkie, I am jealous of your travelling prowess. UAE looks fascinating. I still havent managed to get out of Latin America yet. I recognize all the places in your Mex photos...I dug Guanajuato and disliked SMA, too. I even think we stayed at the same hotel on 5 de mayo in DF.

Anyway, as you probably noticed, I've shamelessly stolen that criminally actionable photo of your brother strangling his daughter for my own pbase page. I think one of us is going to have to hit Chris with a trank dart and drag him onto a flight out of the US before its to late.

keep on posting photos!
Guest 24-Oct-2003 16:14
Got to your photo safari by coincidence: nice pics of the UAE, have been living here for quite a while and was too lazy to take any good photos. I think that you captured the spirit of the region exceptionnally well.

Hi Jim,
This is your cousin from back home in Northeast Ohio – The pictures look great. I hope all is well. I ran into Janice and she gave me your web site. Take care
