A very nice pilgrimage town about four hours from Mangalore. I had a couple of options from Mangalore as my ultimate destination was Hampi. I could go up the coast to Gokarna or cut immediately inland and see Dharmasthala and the other Jain temple towns listed in LP. I decided on Dharmasthala. It was an interesting place, but there are no hotels. You have to stay in a pilgrim rest house and the managers of these are reluctant to give a room to a solo travelling westerner. The rest houses are all very crowded and they are not money-making enterprises. So giving a room to one person that would house a family of Indians is not in their interest. After wandering around town for an hour or so, in scalding heat, I got one of the rest houses to give me a room. It cost one dollar. It was rough, but worth it. It was a great town with lots of interesting sites. No cameras in the main temple or in the Jain temple, but I got some nice shots of the big Bahubali statue and some other places around town.
One of the, many, pilgrim rest houses.
Stopped at this river/tank outside of town. It was a hive of activity. Very nice.
Met this kid there. His father was an instructor in Kannada, Karnataka's language.
Pilgrims, wandering Dharmasthala
My one-dollar room.
The woman at the bottom of this staircase had whipped herself into a state of complete ecstasy.

Bahubali. The statue is not as big as the one in Sravannabelgola, but it's easier to photograph.
