Root-borer, Psalidognathus modestus (Prioninae)

Bellavista Cloud Forest Reserve, Prov. Pichincha, Ecuador

This root-borer longhorn beetle has a formidable appearance, but its large mandibles, claws, and spines are used for self-defense. Larvae of prionine longhorns develop inside tree roots.
