Cosmoid Scale

Latimeria chalumnae is one of few fish characterised by cosmoid scales, although this 5 cm sample was probably obtained from the giant Arapaima of Amazonian rivers. In life, the pearly area of this scale is embedded, being overlapped by other scales. This type of arrangement is known as imbricate articulation.

Hi, Just found this image. Something has gone wrong here: this is not a Latimeria scale but an Arapaima scale. I am personally familiar with both: Latimeria scales carry distinct oval denticles whereas Arapaima scales have the kind of rugose ornament you see here, and the reticulate pattern on the overlapped part of the scale is typical of Arapaima but absent in Latimeria.
