Protoboarmia porcelaria (Dash-lined Looper)

Blue Hills, Milton MA

Collected from off a buildingside at the Blue Hills ski area, 10/18/2008. This guy has a noticable cleft in his head and a pair of bumps along its side less than halfway between the head and rear.

This species overwinters as a caterpillar pressed exposed against a twig. Apparently it is an important food source for insectiverous birds overwintering in New England. (Wagner et al. 2005)
