Spangenberg

Built in the 12th century, the Castle and its grounds lie in North Hessen between Frankfurt Airport (190 kilometres away) and Hannover Airport (210 kilometres away). It is also situated near to the city Kassel (which is 40 kilometres away).

Schloss Spangenberg is one of the most beautiful and strongest fortifications in Hessen. As an outstanding highlight, the castle stands looking out over half-timbered houses with amazingly unique legendary.

Spangenberg a town for a castle, a castle for a town. Both are inbedded in a countryside which still has many man-free areas. The relaxing hills of Hessen which lie along the charming banks of the river Fulda on the German "Ferienstrasse". An enormous amount of forest also surrounds the Schloss Spangenberg. It wasn't for nothing that Spangenberg was once a Hunting Castle.
It is simply wonderful - an incomparable area.

I had the opportunity to stay in this Schloss (castle) for 3 nights. A wonderful experience.

Hi I am also a Spangenberg. My father was Christiaan Jacob Spangenberg(1950-2001) and his father was Petrus Zacharias Cornelius Spangenberg (1920's-1970's) we are/were all from South Africa (GAuteng). From my father's side there is only one brother living and then all us children and our children. I learned about the Schloss when my brother visited Germany for work and I started to research a bit and it is quite awesome. We were told by my father that my grandfather immigrated with his parents from Germany during Heatler's reign, I am not sure how true this is. Will continue research and et some more information from my only surviving uncle as he does not really talk about past.

I am a direct Spangenberg descendant, living in Pennsylvania, USA. My Spangenberg ancestors arrived port of Philadelphia 1750 on Queen of Denmark (Johann Augustus S and his son Carl Frederick S.) My mom told me that, at some point, ancestors here in the US were contacted about a Spangenberg Castle that needed to either be claimed by descendants or it would go the The State (which is what happened). But I do not find reference to this castle ever belonging to someone by that name ... could it be another?

Sorry that the Schloss appears to be unoccupied now. When I visited, it was managed by a Herr und Frau Hoppert. That was in the 70's though so probably underwent some changes since then. Maybe your 2 fathers knew each other from WW2?

My father was a POW there and made an escape attempt from one of the towers - I would love to try and spot the nook in which he hid.

Is the castle now just empty? Anyone know if it is possible to walk round inside?

I stayed in the Schloss with my father who was incarcerated there, in 1974 when it was an hotel and revisited last week to show my wife and found it deserted but in excellent repair externally but no sign of any commercial use a bit disappointing.

I had noted that there were some questions about the Spangenberg coat-of-arms. You possibly had found it already, but if not, log onto Sapngenberg coat of arms and you will find it. Also check under Wikipedia. I was so excited to stumble across this website page today! I would love further info on the Spangenbergs in Germany. My earliest ancestor immigrated to South Africa in 1736. He came from Sangerhausen. I have not been able to find much of anything on the German sector and nothing beyond my grandparents in SA. My grandfather was David Frederick Johannes Spangenberg and born in 1878 in Strydenburg, Cape. Married to Maria Elizabeth Lambrecht, born 1887. I think her maiden name was Roode. I too am a Spangenberg. Born in South Africa but presently residing in Seattle, Washington, USA. I have been doing quite a lot of research on the Spangenbergs. I do not have much info on the early ones other than when the father of our Branch immigrated to South Africa in 1736. If you find the title of the book written in Holland, please let me know. I visited Spangenberg with my wife and stayed ay the Schloss about 7 years ago. It was fantastic and difficult to believe it was a POW camp (like Colditz) during WWII. Fantastic defensive site in the past.
We were impressed by the town War Memorials. Interesting was the small memorial to 3 Frenchmen who died during the Franco-Prussian War of 1871 presumably as prisoners. John in England

I spent quite a number of times at the hotel Schloß Spangenberg of business during the 1990's. I always enjoyed my stay and especially appreciated the fine cuisine offered in the restaurant. The whole area around Spangenberg is very picturesque and staying at schloß only added to the charm.

Someday I'm going back there.

My Grandfather came from Spangenberg, his name is/was Henry. He came to America in the first decade of the 1900's. My Dad was in the USAF and was stationed in Germany from 1966-69 and in 1967 we stayed at the Abby there and were treaty as royalty. It's such a special treat to see the Schloss was finally finished and is now open to the public.

My Grandfather was one of three POWs who successfully escaped from Spangenberg during WW 2. I hope to one day visit the castle and revisit his footsteps as he walked out of the main gates dressed as a red-cross Doctor.

My wife and I stayed the night at the castle on July 22, 2009. It was our last day in Germany after an eleven day road trip visiting Prag, Wurtzburg, Dresden, Berlin, and Hamburg. It was all quite wonderful, especially our stay at Schloss Spangenberg. We dined at the restaurant and had an exquisite dining experience. Your photos are amazing as I hope mine to be. My mother was a Spangenberg from the Sparta, Michigan area. Her Spangenberg relative had 12 sons and named them all John! (John George, etc) He came over from the Hanover area in the mid 1700's. Any one else from this line? We stayed at the castle in the early 1990's and would love to return someday.

I am from South Africa. My father's name was Marthinus Johannes Spangenberg and so was his father, his grandfather and great grandfather. We received a letter from Germany (about 25 years ago) where they asked questions about the family. My father thought it was a joke and throw the papers away. The information in the letter got something to do with the Spangenberg Castle. I also would like to see how the coat of arms look like. Could anyboday help?

My father stayed in Schloss Spangenberg too, but in 1944 when it was an officer's P.O.W. camp and the service wasn't quite up to the standard it is now. Though he had no complaints considering, he was treated correctly and with my Godfather had the honour to be, I am told, the only man to escape and get away. So, if anyone doesn't want to pay their bill, there is a way out over the moat without anyone noticing using ropes and a grappling hook. I look forward to staying there too.

I stayed in this castle in June, 1978. It was such a beautiful place. My room overlooked the village below and the sight of the red roofs below combined with the sound of the church bells was just fabulous. I'd love to go back.

I have letters in German from my greatgrandmother to her aunt in Spangenberg. In these letters the aAunt tells her niece how her mother and she cried when my greatgrandmother was leaving the next day for America, not wanting to say it but knowing that they would likely never meet again. They never did.
