This is a scanned shot taken in September 14, 1998. A pilot by the name of Jim Metzger in Poulsbo, WA offered to take me flying in his custom built 30's era open cockpit, Grumman AgCat bi-plane (on pontoons vice wheels). Jim is visible looking over his right shoulder as we take off.
The occasion was the final ship's movement of the USS CALIFORNIA (CGN36) for weapons offload. She was deactivated on October first of that same year. It was the last time a nuclear powered cruiser of the USN got underway. I was CALIFORNIA's Operations Officer at the time, and my CO agreed to let me miss the movement from Bremerton to Indian Island so I cold get some photos of the transit.
