Time Stands Still Along the Madison 06_02_05.jpg

When my great great (I'm not sure how many greats) uncle Gen. Oliver Otis Howard and his troops chased Chief Joseph and the Nez Perz tribe up this river in 1877 I think it may have looked almost the same. I'm glad that President Grant made Yellowstone the first national park in the world.

Something I found a little amazing when you think about the Nez Perz story. Yellowstone was already a national park. The Nez Perz actually took a number of tourist hostage in Yellowstone. They were released later. That must have made for some great vacation stories when those people got home.

I loved the story about Chief Joseph and its good to know you had an uncle
in that event. I'll get this wrong..but a one of my favorite quotes by the Chief was whenhe decided to surrender he said.."I swear by the Hills form this day forward, I will fight no more forever"

It is really beautiful country isn't it. The sprinkling of snow against the green is quite appealing.

Beautiful! I don't have to count the "greats." My grandfather Lester was a year old in 1877 and my grandmother was three. Those dates have always amazed me as I realized the close connection to the 1870's that I have.
