This gallery is dedicated to photos of a pesky pair of Cooper Hawks that have invaded the area around my home, while their babies hatch and grow. While we have seen them for the past several years, more particularly the remnants of the birds and small rabbits that they leave scattered around our, they pretty much left us alone. That was until May 2015, when one swooped down and gently hit the back of my head. no harm done, but it happened again when i would go out into the backyard. Not much you can do since they are protected. Basically you are told to wear a hat or helmet and walk around with a broom or umbrella until they are done nesting. After seeing what they do to their prey, you don't want that to be your head, so you are constantly figuring out where they are and making sure you can get a broom up at them when they swoop towards you. Really makes it rough when going swimming. They had three babies hatch in 2015, but none of them made it. I should have taken down their nest, which is about 40' up in our AZ Pine tree, right above the pool in the center of pool backyard.This year they returned in late March, and are up to their old tricks. Unfortunately, my wife was not paying attention when she was outside and one of the hawks swooped down and cut her scalp to where she was bleeding- she did not require stitches, but was shaken up. The nest will come down once the babies are gone- there are 4 of them this year.
