Shortly after 12 P.M. we stopped for lunch, which Tina was carrying in her pack. Having had a huge breakfast earlier, I wasn't hungry and had only a couple of cookies. I was simply grateful for the chance to get out of the sun and remove my backpack, and take a couple of pictures of this gorgeous spot.
A dog came trotting along from the direction of the village. We didn't know if it belonged to a resident, a hiker, or if it was a stray. It looked hungry, though, so Tina fed it some scraps from our lunch.
Eventually some men came by on horseback, on their way to the village. We were always being told that the Havasupai, who have occupied Havasu Canyon for the past 800 years, simply tolerated visitors to their land, so we weren't expecting much friendliness on their part. However, most of the Havasupai who passed us on the trail smiled and nodded or waved, so I was pleasantly surprised.
