Boyce Thompson Arboretum Storm Damage March 2006

On March 11 of this year it snowed at Boyce Thompson Arboretum. It was fun and pretty seeing the snow, but what happened afterward was devastating and heartbreaking. The weight of the snow caused the limbs of many trees in the park to break. There were so many broken limbs it was hard to believe what I was seeing. Some trees completely fell over. Over the next few days BTA Staff and volunteers worked hard to clear up the wreckage and make the trails clear and safe for BTA visitors.

Wow - our poor trees and plants - don't know what hit them!!! I'm sure that the staff and volunteers are putt'in it all back together.... If we were closer, we would help.

The wonderful thing about this damage is that Mother Nature will heal it all very soon and all the really great birds that the Arboretum has don't know about it and will all continue coming.

Wow... looks like a big wind storm blew through BTA. I understand why it needed to be closed for cleanup.

impressive photos, tammy, thanks for posting this album so website visitors can see the storm's aftermath. if you rewrite or update any of the introductory paragraph at the top of the page you might include a link to your previsouly posted "snow photos" gallery -- that shows some of the storm which caused so much damage to the trees (or visitors can click the ALL GALLERIES link to find that album). thanks for documenting this, tammy! ~pw

I'm so sorry to see this devestation in this beautiful area. We had an ice storm in Virginia a couple of years ago and some of the trees are still not healed. I hope the weather improves for all of us.
