On New Years Eve Icelanders celebrate the coming of the new years like nearly everybody else. Usually a lot of people go to watch a fire, where they burn away the old year to make room for the new one, and then at midnight everybody lights their fireworks so there is one hell of a fireworks display at midnight which lasts for about 1 to 1 and a half hours. This year it is thought that at least 300 tonns of fireworks were lighted.
