Doug is less than knee-deep in the water with his tripod, camera, and looooong lens.
He takes a couple more steps and suddenly he is chest deep in water and holding his heavy camera gear as high as he can to prevent it from getting wet.
Evidently he has stepped into a deep hole and cannot get his footing to get out.
He reaches for stumps and branches jutting out of the water, but each time these break off.
I hold my tripod out to him, but it will not reach.
About this time the alligator goes into a frenzy and I don't know who is splashing more water... Doug or the alligator.
As he regained his footing and got out of the hole, the alligator slipped beneath the water and the swamp was once again quiet.
I developed great respect for the swamp and it's critters and swore I would never, ever wade in the swamp!
Who knows what lurks beneath those quiet waters.
