Cemetery near Leonora

It was very sad looking at the marked graves here. There were far too many which were the result of many accidents at Gwalia gold mine over the years.
So many of the graves had no headstones at all, perhaps overseas people who had come to make their fortune in the goldrush.

After travelling through this dry and desolate landscape recently myself, I had to wonder how many early prospectors perished out here? There were no permanent rivers or creeks, roads or even settlements in the beginning and with summertime temperatures over 45C it must have been a very tough existence indeed. I do think the ones with an unmarked grave were lucky compared to those that are still lying out there somewhere in the Mulga or an old mine shaft! V

How very different from my image of Père Lachaise today. This certainly does give an air of desolation, a very poignant reminder.

I'm always saddened by the unmarked and forgotten graves, especially those early settlers and pioneers who came from distant shores and lay forever under our sunburnt land I'm glad you posted this so they could be noticed by a few of us

Such a differnt looking cemetery to any here. The complete abscence of flowers or plants add to the sad feel for me.

A very interesting sight, and sad too. I do like exploring old graveyards that provide a connection with local histories.
