In 1857, the family lost the rent at the mill and were forced to live in the Old Jail, the Cachot, an old jail abandoned in 1824. March 27th, Francois Soubrious was wrongly accused of having stolen a bag of flour and was put in jail for a week. In November, the family had one less mouth to feed, Bernadette was sent as a housemaid to a farm in Bartes, where in the evenings she took care of the children and during the day she tended the sheep. She stayed at Bartes till January 1858 just three weeks before the Appirations.
