The Leopard Adventure

This is an adventure that took place over two days in the Serengeti. We first spotted the leopard in the tree and a recent kill (an impala) lying in the brush by the base of a close by tree. It must have been a very recent kill, as the leopard was resting prior to dragging the carcass up the tree out of the range of other predators and scavengers. While we watched, the leopard descended from the tree but we couldn't see where it went.

On a return visit the next morning, we saw that the leopard had dragged the impala carcass up to a higher branch in the tree. A troop of baboons came by, and we thought that they might make a try for the carcass, but apparently they never noticed it. Baboons can actually kill a leopard if there are enough of them.

On a third visit back to the leopard we saw one of two leopard cubs feeding on the carcass and then descending to mama's branch where mama proceeded to groom the cub. The cub subsequently descended from the tree while mama remained behind.
