Dandong is a prosperous place of a million or so people that serves as a trade portal with North Korea which sits directly across the Yalu River. It was interesting to compare the bustling waterfront on the Chinese side with the much duller Korean side. Lonely Planet talks of paddocks and fields on the Korean side but it was built up when we visited although seemingly deserted. The phrase "Potemkin Village" sprang to mind.
