A "Year End" sail on the bay
Oakland Estuary (the channel between Oakland and Island of Alameda) is packed by a wide
variety of marinas, wharfs and maritime businesses. They range in their appearance
from "polished and touristy" to working marinas with a full range of services a yacht
owner might ever need. The Island Yacht Club presides over one of the south most
marinas on the Alameda Island. It is located amid of many boat and yacht shops and
businesses. Parking is plenty and easy, and that is what counts. Personally I like
the Estuary and its feel. Lots of visuals ranging from marinas, US Coast Guard cutters
and Jack London Square water front dining. On the other end of the scale: scrap metal
unloading docks, large container cranes and the former navy base with now deteriorating
launch platforms, dry docks and an old airfield.
Surely fascinating to see up and than, however boat owners get sometimes nostalgic for the bay side of the Island (Ballena Bay,) allowing to get out quick and sail faster. |
