The story has a happy ending. The next morning I was out hunting for rooms before eight o'clock. The second place I asked had a lovely, large, clean single room, with a nice bathroom, where you didn't have to stradle the toilet to take a shower, for less than the hovel I was staying in.

And the icing on the cake, which I discovered after I'd checked in, was the roof-top pool - result! I'm a happy bunny again.
