Polk Street near Canal Boulevard-October 14

New Orleans, Louisiana

I took my husband into the City today to show him the devastation in parts of the City that know no socio-economic or racial boundaries. He was stunned at what he saw. I had already been there so I was immune to numbness; just awe. Thus far Katrina is responsible for the death of 1,032 people in Louisiana.
Look at the water line on these houses where water sat for several weeks. The orange markings were made by military and police rescue teams who searched each house twice or three times for living or dead. It was not a nice job, particularly when two bodies at a time would be found in a house.

Was it Katrina that caused the deaths, or the stupidity of the MAYOR that did not use New Orleans Emergency Evacuation Plan to get the people out of New Orleans.

The damage is devistating, but the deaths are a lot more than that.

I was able to speak to some of those whom went for the searches and it was very difficult to just listen to them what they found. I spoke to one person in particular whom told me that he had served in war situations before and had seen dead bodies before, but this was probably the worst he had seen, due to the length the bodies were exposed to water. Very striking image, it says a lot with the marking on the door and the water line.
