USS New York's Maiden Voyage (please read narrative)

New Orleans, Louisiana

Thousands of people waving American flags lined the tops of the levee and the banks of the Mississippi River at sunrise to watch the USS New York leave the shipyard in Avondale, Louisiana, where it was built and sail down the Mississippi.
Named the USS New York in memory of those who lost their lives in the terrorists' attack on September 11, the U.S. Navy ship has 7 1/2 tons of steel from the World Trade Center's fallen twin towers built into it. It will be commissioned in a few weeks in New York. Today is the birthday of the U. S. Navy. The ship will be based at Norfolk, Virginia and carry Marine landing crafts and aircraft when deployed to duty.
I was happy to have gotten this shot with the sun shining on the "towers" on the ship because a few seconds later the sun went behind a cloud and a huge fog bank rolled in. The thousands and thousands who were waiting at the foot of Canal Street saw the ship through the fog, making it all the more a reminder of 9/11.

What a wonderful image and narrative. I had not heard about this. The addition of the flag makes it even more special. A big vote, Coleen.

You got a magnificent shot of it with the angled flag and the sun on the distant buildings. Those spots of color on the tug boat are the perfect accent.

Nice shot, Coleen, She was on the news tonight, it could barely be seen in the fog. Your photo show off this beauty nicely.

Amazing, out of such a disaster, to make such a beautiful memorial. We saw video of this on the news tonight, but this photo is so much more impressive.

Your photo captures everything, the twin towers, the gleaming ship, and our glorious flag, for which so many have given and will continue to give their lives to protect and defend. OK we'll get off the soapbox now. Thanks for being there !!!

I read about this today. What an awsome shot, Coleen! May she rule the seas with victory. Amazing how they used the World Trade Center to build her. This is one great image with the flag! BV!
