Discovered growing as a dooryard tree in Beijing, China in 1908 by USDA plant explorer Frank Meyer.
Its history prior to that is unknown. Its parentage is unknown. The fruit is very juicy and much less acidic than other varieties.
The tree bears abundant fruit continously throughout the year but is most prolific during the winter months.
