Looking straight down at the lighthouse from atop the lookout.
The lighthouse employs a first order Fresnel (Fray-nel) lens.
It is one of the world's largest First order Fresnel Hyperradiant lenses.
Custom handmade in France at cost of about $12,000 in 1909.
When originally installed, the lens floated in mercury to reduce friction in order to allow it to rotate as efficiently as possible.
The light from it can be seen for 28 miles.
