| This is Typhoon Kit in August of 1985. We are about 150 miles north of Okinawa, Japan. You can see calm ocean surface and the "not calm" eyewall. Typhoon Kit stands out in my memory because I had the honor (?) of experiencing this storm both in the air and on the ground. A few days earlier, we had arrived in Okinawa to fly Typhoon Kit, thinking that it wouldn't turn the way that it eventually did. Well, the island got pounded, and we had to delay our takeoff for almost a whole day and stay indoors while the storm raged outside and passed by very close. We were very lucky on two counts - first, it wasn't a particularly strong storm so not too much damage was done, and second, because we didn't run out of beer... |
