PORTMEIRION VILLAGE

For those who haven't come across Portmeirion before, it is a private resort located in North Wales, the buildings are mostly in use as hotels and holiday cottages. It was built by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis between 1925-1976. The architecture is usually described as Italianate, with some of the buildings designed by Williams-Ellis and some rescued from other locations. It is open to day visitors although some areas are only accessible to guests, all my pictures were taken from public access locations.

Until I get around to filling out the history of the place and the buildings, please bear in mind the comment of the founder:

It is not Atlas on the pedestal holding up the earth. It is Hercules, note the lion's skin from the First Labour. Recall that Hercules agreed to hold up the earth in the stead of Atlas in return for his help. And, by the way, Atlas had to be tricked back into holding up the earth. BTW, did you know there is dinnerware company named "Portmeirion?" If you're near a china shop, stop in and take a look. One pattern is called "Botanic Garden." The florals on the plates may look familiar. Shu
