St. George Island: The Forgotten Florida

St. George Island is located on the panhandle of Florida. The island is surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico and Appalachicola Bay. This bay is the largest estuary in the USA and is home to thousands of birds, fish, and mammals. This bay is the largest producer of commercial oysters in the US, so harvesting and packaging seafood is the area's largest industry. jiinm you may not know this but i live right here in ocala,florida and i knew your brothr . I was originally from middlesboro,ky and i moved to florida in 1961.ive been here almost my whole life and i love daytona beach,fl.

I love this gallery -- found it from your blog. Our family vacations (I grew up in southern Ohio) were always to Florida, Gulf Coast, at Christmas time. St. George Island is further north from where we stayed, but the pics take me right back to those wonderful times. I can smell the salt air, feel the cool to warm breezes. Wonderful gallery.

My family and I just spent a week on St George Island. We have been going down there for about 9 years now. we never get tired of all the sights, walking on the beach, swimming and all the other things to do. We have stayed in the state park often as well as in rental houses. We enjoy everything about the island and surrounding area and are sad when we have to return home.

Jim, your photos are magnificent. I especially enjoy the St George Island and Smoky Mtn series.
Im writing this Jan 1 04 and apparently youve so far only done a few with your Rebel D300.The ones I like were all done with the Olympic 2100UZ, so I'm curious if you feel the DRebel will do equally good or better than your Olympic (I'm planning on getting a Rebel soon)?

Hi Jim, I just spent a very pleasant 30 minutes browsing thru your gallery. Time well spent for me, a very relaxing learning experience !! I loved the pics of the Pelican on the pole, the Seagull soaring high, and the stark branches of the old dead tree. They particularly caught my eye as I have three very similar shots and it's reassuring to think that I am starting to recognise a photo op when one pops up. Thanks for a wonderful holiday. Jackeroo
