Wonder Years Centre for Excellence (WYCE) is a UK based charity, working in the small village of Madina Salaam in the southern Kombos of The Gambia. Many of its residents are refugees who have fled conflict and post conflict zones in nearby countries. The charity fund a school which is run in conjunction with the Gambian board of directors, as well as an outpatient clinic and delivery suite staffed by Ndey, a dual-trained nurse/midwife, a mother and baby group, women's literacy groups and support for the local Islamic school.
You can read more about what WYCE does on their website: www.wyce.org.uk
Whilst in The Gambia I volunteered at the school and clinic, making a health record for each of the (approximately) 350 children from nursery 1 through to grade 6. This involved checking they were registered in school, accounting for any "missing" children, and then weighing and measuring the height of each child.
