The Crater

Mt. St. Helens, WA

After yesterday’s inside view of the Spruce Goose, today’s photographic challenge was to find something else to look into. We found it by flying North out of Camas to Mt. St. Helens. This is looking down into the NE side which blew out 26 years ago. Note the venting steam and the lava inside the “new” crater.

We had breathtakingly beautiful weather today as we left the Portland area for Southern Oregon via Mt. St. Helens and then back to the Columbia River gorge, East to the Dalles, and then South along the East side of the Cascades to land at Klamath Lakes.

That dome the steam is coming from just formed a couple years ago. Then, they thought it might blow again. Few photographic images on pbase actually cause me to suck in air. This one did! Big vote!

Looks like a neat adventure flying over this still smoldering volcano. Great capture.

This is the first detailed image I have seen of the top of Mt St Helens in 26 years. I have watched a lot of discovery channel stuff and have never seen a view that shows what the entire top of the mountain looks like. Thanks for sharing, Robin.
