Jan 15 - Verano Sunset

Rancho Bernardo, CA

My morning PaD (get the hubris of that comment – like I just routinely post morning, afternoon, and evening PaDs a la Dr. Pepper [10, 2, and 4]?!) seemed to fool no one. Everyone of course knew it was a barrel cactus except perhaps for Cliff who seemed a bit confused ;-) !

So this is a bit of documentation sending a message to Herb to show that I was able to crawl panting up another hill tonight on my daily walk. I post this sunset shot from an angle none of you have ever seen before. (Because I never climbed that hill with a camera before.)

Of genuine photographic interest is the original image was a RAW shot. So, in Photoshop I loaded it once to emphasize the sunset, and once then again changing my levels setting to bring out the foreground. Then I erased the top half of the sky getting some level of light on both sunset and the path in the foreground.

As The Crow Flies?

Every day at sunset (and sunrise) the local crows flood the sky. I marvel at this and wonder about these birds. Are crows loved or hated? They sure are regular and noisy.

Oh, the crows were taken in a separate frame, trimmed out from their sky, and pasted here so I could make my point. That is is what it really looks like!

Your images and PS work is great Robin. You have given me some good tips! This is beautiful with the crows. Almost like an alternate set for "The Birds"!

Spectacular shot, love the birds in the sky.

This shot just rocks!

Robin, you did the exposure merge really well. I can't get it to work as well in PS as Capture One software (which has not been released yet for the 20d). Great view!

Good work Robin, the crows were a nice touch. I do like the lighting on the 'pathway' there too. And.. wtg on the daily walk & new hill!

L.C. I agree w/ your critique. I did over-sharpen the bottom, and the pixlelation bothers me too. Thanks for noticing.

The light on this is beautiful... excellent composition. I'm bothered by the pixelation that resulted where the mountains meet the sky and I feel the lower portion to be oversharpened. A few tweaks and this is a wall hanger.

Nice place, but this does remind me of Hitchock's " The Birds. "

I will comment on the crows. The area I spend most of my time by the American River can have up wards of 300 crows sometimes. Sometimes none. They are a beautiful bird and I like to watch them. However, they are the nosiest animal I have ever heard. And when they're all there and get to squawking I almost can't stand it. Why they have to be so noisy I don't know. Maybe because none of the other birds pay them any attention. I have, unjustly to be sure, banded them from my galleries. Hey, nobody's perfect.

That sounds like a lot of work but it turned out beautiful!

Nice image. Since you mentioned Dr.Pepper's 10,2 and 4. I have a shot for you here. http://www.pbase.com/lundy/image/38684947 taken in my hometown of Roanoke, VA.

The most impressive part is climbing up the hill with the camera.
The next impressive part is the sunset.
No comment on the crows.

Well, the net effect of all your work is really terrific. It's a wonderful sunset image, and the crows are a nice addition.

Now the rest of the PAD's are going to think that we always modify the San Diego sky to make it beautiful :^)
Good job!

Like the path fading off into the distance. Sounds like a complicated process, but I think I understand - pretty neat! Nice scene, thanks for walking up that hill to share with us :)

it's nice to know the steps you took to enhance this picture and to let us know just EXACTly what you see each evening . . and morning and afternoon, Doc.

All of your technique talk is Greek to me still(one day I hope to learn) but it certainly made for a beautiful photo. The crows can really lollygag as they travel in the morning and evening from wherever they came from or wherever they're going.

Wow! Nice work!

That is a very interesting explanation of that technique, Robin. I've heard others mention that they used two layers and merged them, but I was never clear as to how. This is very clear and a great picture and I'm impressed with your afternoon walk :-)
