Racing the weather.

Click here for my on-line journal: AS I SEE IT

We left our first night's anchorage in the Halifax River at sunrise. The temperature was 37 degrees F when I pulled the anchor this morning, but the cockpit warmed up nicely as the sun came up. We want to make it to the protected mooring fields of Vero Beach by Saturday Night. That is when more heavy weather is suppose to come in. Vero is a little far from here to do in two days... but we will see. Of more immediate concern is shoaling on the waterway near Ponce Inlet. We we get there at low tide. The shifting bottom is hard to judge after a night of heavy wind. The wind blew strong and hard last night... so we were anxious about Ponce early in the morning.

We motored through the shoaling area at Ponce with no problems. After that, we had to time the opening of a few bridges. Two of them near the Kennedy Space Center will not open for marine traffic during the hours employees of the center are commuting to and from work. We caught the first one on time, however we were late for the second bridge. We had to wait for a little more than an hour to get beyond. By then it was close to sunset... so we anchored south of the bridge and settled in for a quiet evening onboard.

If we can cover the same distance tomorrow that we did today, we should be in the protected mooring fields of Vero Beach by sunset. Which will be before the heavy weather is forecasted to blow in.
