Leiden

Leiden is a very old town, dating from about 1100 A.D.
In the very neigbourhood the Romans already built fortessses and fortifications
Nowadays it has about 120.000 inhabitants many of which are students at the city's university
The Leiden university is very old (founded 1572) and attracted many famous scientists for example Einstein
In the 16'th century Leiden was the second biggest city in Holland with already 70.000 people living there.
All of them lived inside the ring of canals protecting them from enemies
Furtheron Leiden has many museums, maybe the most famous of them is the Museum of antiquities.
But above all the painter Rembrandt van Rijn was born here and lived most of his life here.
