Thanks Sean. Are you the person who sometimes posts on that French forum (in french)?

The M. umbellata flowered early because I transplanted it the year before. I have another about two metres high which produced a few flowers this year, so it must be getting big enough- this has taken about 15 years. The umbellatas have grown much faster with all the rain this past few summers.

Most of the plants pictured are still here. The worst we had in Dec. '10 was -3c. No sub zero days here. Even so, the biggest 'Oceana', which was fully exposed to the efreezing north-east wind, had quite a lot of damage. A smaller one which was sheltered by some shrubs had much less damage. Cyathea medullaris and bigger Metrosideros excelsa were almost undamaged by the same temperatures.

I've just discovered your photo gallery and am stunned at what's thriving in your garden, especially the New Zealand treasures and those amazing succulents - I hope all survived the Arctic blasts of 2010. Having tried and failed to grow the Chatham Is. nikau (Rhopalostylis 'Oceana')from seed, I'd welcome any hints for success. And how did you get that wonderful rata (Metrosideros umbellata)to blossom luxuriantly at a metre or so, when it normally takes 20 years to flower?
