c. 1944: Dad's "Short Snorter" (see caption below for explanation) on reverse of British 10-shilling note.

A "short snorter" was a tradition that began with airmen of WW2 who had flown across the equator from one country to another. A "short snorter" referred to someone who was a member of the "fraternity" as well as the membership card itself - paper currency signed by other "short snorters." Sometimes bills were taped together in a long chain. Some considered them to be good-luck tokens which they carried around with them. For others it was just something to do. Uniquely an American invention, the practice seems to have died out after the Korean War.
