Vank Cathedral, Esfahan

Vank Cathedral (also known as the Holy Savior Cathedral or The Church of the Saintly Sisters), is a cathedral in Isfahan, Iran. Vank means "monastery" or "convent" in the Armenian language.

After the loss at the battle of Chaldivan where Persia lost to the Ottomans, Shah Abbas moved the Christians who were living in the area of Jolfa (near the current Armenian border), to New Jolfa in Esfahan.

Construction on the Cathedral is believed to have begun in 1606. The Cathedral has some elements of a mosque and others similar to Western churches.

The central dome depicts the Biblical story of creation. Two bands of murals run around the interior walls: the top section depicts events from the life of Jesus, while the bottom section depicts tortures inflicted upon Armenian martyrs by the Ottoman Empire.

The paintings were painted by Armenian masters and three monks Havans, Stepanus and Minas.
