Tomb of Darius the Great (522-486 BC)

The Tomb of Darius the Great is in remarkable condition considering that it is over 2500 years old.

The top part of the tomb shows Darius on top of a massive dias with lion heads on either corner.
Darius pays tribute to Ahura Mazda, while a fire temple burns to the right and the moon is represented in the night sky.
Of particular interest from a historical perspective, are the 30 representatives from all parts of the Achaemenid Empire that are depicted holding up the dias.
You can click here to compare these with the reliefs on the Apadana Staircase at Persepolis which show the delegates from the 23 satrapies (provinces) bringing gifts during the Nou Ruz (new year) festival.
I have also named each of the delegates for easy reference on the top tier and bottom tier.

Darius's tomb contains 2 important inscriptions: The inscription known as "DNa" is a political statement which reads:
"I am Darius the great king, king of kings, king of countries containing all kinds of men, king in this great earth far and wide."
"By the favour of Ahuramazda these are the countries which I seized outside of Persia; I ruled over them; they bore tribute to me; they did what was said to them by me; they held my law firmly".
It then goes on to list the names of the 30 representatives shown holding up the dias.
The inscription known as "DNb" is a religious statement.
You can find out more about Darius's Tomb from this web site.

The photos are best viewed in the "original" size (by clicking on the "Original" link at the bottom of each photo).
The main photograph from which the others have been built was constructed from various photos stitched together.
(The reliefs are high up on the mountainside and so a 400mm lens was used to capture as much detail as possible for each section).
The outlines of all the bas reliefs were then traced (30 hours of work), in order to allow the background to be softened and thus to bring out the bas reliefs in finer and clearer detail.
