Dunlin - Duxbury Beach, MA - Oct 12, 2011 delayed molt

Most of the Dunlin have arrived very nearly molted into the dull brown gray of the "basic" plumage. Today a number of birds were seen (overnight arrivals?) that looked like this bird - very reddish brown with a light supercilium and streaking down the sides - not unliike a White-rumped Sandpiper. A number of them had long but straight bills. Perhaps these came from a different breeding population - also they my be juveniles but the books say the striping is gone from the juveniles by the time they leave the breeding grounds. Note the dark upper belly on this bird.
