I do shoot my splashes at 1/20s, but it's the duration of the flash which freezes the motion not the camera shutter speed. I use a Canon 550EX most of the time and at 1/16 power the flash duration (and hence effective shutter speed) is about 1/15000s. Hope this helps explain things.

Richard...your work is inspirational! I LOVE your soap film and splash galleries!! Are you really shooting at 1/20s for the splashes? I've never attempted shots like those, but I've always assumed they must be shot at a higher shutter speed to freeze the motion. Either way, they're very well done! Bravo! Salut from Canada!
